My proposal

April 30, 2018

Many of my followers might already know that I myself recently got engaged! It feels odd to say that actually because for years I have been watching, documenting and celebrating so many other engagements and weddings. I have seen it all: the chill bride, the crazed bride, the break-down bride, the sentimental bride.....I have been the photographer, but also the therapist, the dress wrangler, the hair stylist, the baby-sitter, the family councillor and you name it, I have been there for anything and everything you can imagine. The more I have experienced it all, the more I have known what I DON'T want. It is funny though, because now it is my time to plan my wedding and it seems its hard to narrow down what I actually DO want! lol

My fiancé is from Paris. (dreamy right?) He has lived in Canada for nearly 6 years and we met just across the street from my house 2 years ago. I do not own a dog but I LOVE dogs! Since I work for myself, I had the ability to dog-sit my friends dog while I worked from home. It was a fabulous arrangement. My friend would drop off "Blackjack" every morning at 6:30am and we would spoon in the bed, go for a morning coffee walk and then he would sit at my feet while I worked on editing or blogging. We would take a lunch break in the back yard and do it all again the next day. The best part about it was that I had a dog when it was convenient for me...but when it wasn't he got looked after by someone else!

One cold evening, I had asked to have him sleep over because I am a real softy and wanted to spoil this fur baby with cuddles and treats - and really just wanted a companion to watch Netflix with. To my utter disgust that evening it was a full blown Canadian blizzard outside. I packed on my clothes, and took Blackjack to the park across the street. It was the kind of cold where your fingers are frozen through your gloves but this doggy loved the snow! I stood in one spot and shook up and down to try and stay warm, when to my surprise anti-social Blackjack started playing with another dog who showed up. I swear this dog never played with any dog at the park until it was the coldest day on earth. Because I am a true softy - I stayed because he was having so much fun....and thats when I met his playmate's owner, Soul. To make the story even more romantic (I am not making this up), Soul and I started talking about photography. We had a ton in common, and as I shook madly thinking frostbite had gotten to my fingers, I noticed Soul frantically dabbling his runny nose. We stood outside like idiots for much too long chatting and then we decided to exchange numbers. I pulled out my phone to enter his info and while it sat in my frozen hand, I watched it turn off from also being frozen. lol. I told Soul that my phone just died and "I am sure I'll see you around." He told me he didn't have his phone on him, but that he was good with numbers. He asked me to tell him my number and he would text me when he got home. I thought "yeah right. I can barely remember my own phone number." But I told him my number anyway. He repeated it and we said bye.

Two hours later, while I snuggled with Blackjack still defrosting, I received a text.

The rest is complicated but history. lol.

Fast forward two years and to Soul's visit to Nicaragua this March. He could only leave work for a week, but came to see me at the end of yearly adventure. We had a great time exploring close the property together and also adventuring on Ometepe Island. We had discussed getting married but I did not know this was going to be the proposal. I did question myself but when Soul didn't pay much attention to his baggage, I thought "No way is there a ring in there. He would be too protective of his bag." But on the 3rd last day of our trip, we were exploring my property and he was actually photos of me for my social media. He asked me to climb up onto this house in ruins and I did. I silently evaluated his creative vision - thinking that it was a strange shot he was composing - but I didn't want to criticize it. As I stood there waiting for him to compose his shot, he reached into his back pocket and got down on his knee. I saw a ring box in his hand and immediately started crying. He then popped the question nervously and obviously I said "YES"!

The rest of the evening was perfect. We walked to the beach and watched the sun set and then had an impromptu dinner with our friends from the surf camp down the street. It was a perfect day, followed by a perfect night. And we were the ones getting married!

I will do my best to outline my plans for our wedding. The first hint is were doing it in Nicaragua! :)

I am over the moon about it and yet it still doesn’t feel all that real. I cannot wait to marry this wonderful man!
