Tasty Wedding Cake Alternatives

September 26, 2018

Many of the long standing wedding traditions we're all familiar with are becoming a thing of the past. Couples nowadays want a wedding that is more unique and true to who they are and what they love. And we are big supporters of doing what you love! Especially on the most important day of your life. The wedding cake is a perfect example of how you can easily do something cool and different on your wedding day.

Cheese Wheel Wedding Cake

Okay, repeat after me “cheese wheel wedding cake.” Yep, you read that right. Instead of something sweet, cheese lovers rejoice because a cheese wheel wedding “cake” is a thing now. I love good cheese and am a fan of soft cheese, hard cheese and yes, even stinky cheese! It’s usually the tastiest, in my opinion.

The beauty of this is how easy it is to assemble a cheese tower that mimics a traditional wedding cake. All you have to do is stack them up and add some pretty garnishes like grape leaves, figs or cute labels so your guests know what you’re serving. Don’t forget the crackers!

Fruit

Another great alternative to something dessert-y is fruit. This is a great option because of how naturally pretty and colourful fruit is. You really don’t have to do much to enhance your presentation. Just be sure to pick a variety of different fruit in varying shapes and colours. If you prefer to add some element of dessert to your fruit tower, you can’t go wrong with the classic chocolate covered strawberries, which are always a big hit.

Macarons

Macarons are a dessert that have exploded in popularity in recent years. And with good reason. They are such a simple yet pretty dessert. From what I’m told, they are quite complex to master so you’re better off leaving this to the dessert professionals. They can be made in what seems like an endless array of flavours and colours. Above all, I love how stunning they look when arranged in a traditional wedding cake tower display.

Doughnuts

One of my favourite guilty pleasure desserts is doughnuts. To me, they are like a little taste of heaven in your mouth. I love that the doughnut has become so trendy in recent years because it has resulted in being able to find doughnuts in the most unusual and super yummy flavours! Maple bacon anyone??

Couples have really taken to this trend and we’ve seen doughnut wedding cakes explode in popularity. And we love how easy it is to make a doughnut cake look pretty. The doughnuts themselves are usually decorated enough that all you really have to do is find a cute cake stand and stack them on there! Or, you can display them on a doughnut wall which, I have to admit, looks pretty cool!

Pies are a great wedding cake alternative for couples who want more of a low key and relaxed vibe at their wedding. If you have a beloved pie recipe in your family, now is the time to share it with the world!

Yes, a regular old apple pie may look a little too plain and boring for a wedding, but you can always play around with the top structure of the pie. Add some delicate flowers made from the pie crust dough (or better yet, real flowers!) or fancy braiding to really amp up the look. And don’t forget the cute pie toppers which will definitely take your pie wedding cake to the next level.

Whatever wedding cake alternative you choose, whether sweet or savoury, rest assured that your friends and family won’t miss the traditional three tier wedding cake one bit…as long as you serve them something scrumptious!
