Tips for successful Family Portraits

October 2, 2019

It's clear that this little girl is the heart of this family. I had the pleasure of photographing Katie and Tysen's wedding some years ago and couldn't be more excited to come meet their daughter Mackenzie! A well behaved little girl full of energy and personality; this session had mom and dad jumping, running and dancing!

Family Portraits

Instead of hanging out in their home, we opted to take it to the local streets for outdoor light, city backdrops and some natural settings. We even set out to Mackenzie's favourite place; her school!

Family portraits involving small children should never be taken too seriously. Kids hate that. Sometimes parents have such high expectations that their child will sit and smile for a photo, and I can almost always say that most kids won't entertain that idea! Family sessions should be fun! Goofing around, playing games and making them high energy are my tactics to get kids interested and smiling naturally. These are also the most cherished and authentic photos, don't you think?

Distracting kids with dance, games or timing and race games are all great ways to keep kids involved in the session. Parents often try too hard to fulfill their goal of everyone looking just perfect for that "smiling photo". I say, if you have fun together, the photo will speak for itself.

Setting out to your favourite park, beach or forest is good enough a location than any. Aim for natural light settings, and an evening sun never hurt anyone. To be honest, a location without a lot of distractions and people is the key and from there it's all about getting your family loose and having fun together!

Patience is Key

Family sessions usually run about 2-3hours with me as I like to take breaks, give kids time for a snack and explore multiple positions in a location. The smaller the child, the more time it generally takes. Keeping everyone calm and relaxed is key for success, so coming prepared is crucial. Snacks, water, blankets and even your child's favourite toy can help keep everyone at bay. Don't forget your patience!

Thank you so much Clifford Family for a wonderful evening of shooting and catching up. Until we meet again.
