What Makes Mini Sessions so Great?

November 27, 2020

Why would anyone choose a mini shoot over a full private session? What makes the mini session so great? Well, simply put, you will get the same pro quality photos for a fraction of the cost! Who can say no to that?!

This summer I had the pleasure of shooting mini sessions for new and returning families since my wedding clients had been forced to postpone their weddings. A huge disappointment in one respect, but so thankful for the support of so many return clients and so many new too! Who knew what a weekend felt like? lol.

WHY CHOOSE A MINI SESSION OVER A FULL SESSION?

I have always loved family portraits and to be honest I have only ever offered mini's a handful of times in the past. What I discovered is that they are perfect for families with small kids. Short attention spans work well in short stints of time, so the mini is key for kids under 7yrs. A small investment for a small risk if your kid is just having a bad day, or is terrible in front of the camera.

Another great advantage to the mini session is that you can utilize it for more than just a family session. These 20-30min sessions are a great way to capitalize on updating your business headshot or your social media profile. They are sentimental gifts for grandparents, friends or spouses. Friends can gift them at wedding showers or baby showers. They can be used to commemorate an anniversary or engagement. Often parents use them for Motherhood or fatherhood sessions to document the growth of their child. These are all awesome ways to celebrate your loved ones. And all of these possibilities can be documented for a fraction of the usual shoot cost.

MINI'S WITH A BABY

I highly recommend arriving to your mini location super early so that your child can discover the area on their own first. Allow them to play freely while you wait for your session to start. Shy kids will get used to their environment so when the photographer appears, they are somewhat familiar to the space.

Don't forget to keep your expectations low, and allow your child to have fun! Candid, playful images are the best in my opinion. Most importantly, play with your family and allow your photographer to do the directing!

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A MINI

Mini's are shorter and less expensive than a full session for 2 reasons. Firstly, a mini constitutes being a mini when your photographer can bulk multiple shoots together in a sequence at ONE location only. This fast shooting style allows them to make a profit while still giving you a good product.

Secondly, you will get a certain number of images as your final product, as opposed to the entire shoot. Mini's generally will give you anywhere from 5-10 images on average and this should be outlined before your session. Any additional images will be an additional cost. Sometimes, you will have the option to buy out all the images afterwards.

TIME IS MONEY

We must all remember that time is money. If you want time to get your family used to their photographer, take breaks for your baby, change environments or postpone shoots for better weather, you better hire your photographer for a full private session where you can take advantage of all the perks! Of course, a full session also means (for most photographers), all the images! Don't forget that your photographer will take hours to edit and process your images too!
