Let loose with your Family Portrait

April 23, 2021

Family portraits give you a time to let loose and have fun! I met this spunky family shortly after moving to Hamilton and had the pleasure of capturing what their essence is all about! We headed off to The Dundas Driving Park and I documented them dancing, scooting, running and tickling one another silly. Above all, they were candid and focused on play.

Family portraits don't need to be dreaded. They should be fun, laid-back and allow your photographer to capture the true personalities of each person. The best way to ensure that is to leave all your insecurities and expectations at home. Go ahead and plan your outfits and come with full bellies so the intention is to just enjoy in the company of one another. In other words, the less you are concerned with the camera, the better the outcome!

BRING PROPS

Feel free to bring toys, bubbles, blankets, balls or anything that gets your kids engaged. Gone are the days of yelling at your kids to smile and stare at the camera. I promise you; these photos are never appealing - especially when kids don't know how to "put on a smile."

GO OFF SCRIPT - It's Liberating!

Allow your photographer to direct you as needed and don't be afraid to give them something spontaneous and fun to capture. It is okay to go off script. Trust me, your photographer loves a family who doesn't try to look their best at every angle and pose. Be real. Be you. Be authentic. Your photographer will cull the bad shots for you. The goal is to show your true self as much as possible.

As a result, the camera will show your true colours. Consequently, you can see that this family didn't worry for a second about how they might appear. They just embraced the moment and it shows.
